Aloha by the Bay
The Jonathan Tarr Foundation is presenting San Diego Aloha By the Bay, a multicultural, intergenerational and educational event featureing music and dance performances by various Pacific Islander communities including the Ahahui Kiwila O Hawaii, Hui O Hawaii San Diego, Pacific Islander Festival Association, Samoan Community Council San Diego, and Sons and Daughters of Guam San Diego.
All proceeds from the event benefit the Jonathan Tarr Foundation, a nonprofit organization which recognizes the potential, and rewards the determination of students from nontraditional and traditional high schools. Since 1999 to 2015, JTF has provided $313,000 and 416 scholarships to seniors graduating from 77 high schools, representing 19 school districts in San Diego, Imperial and Orange Counties. 55% are First Generation, first in their immediate families to pursue college or post-secondary programs.
The Jonathan Tarr Foundation was established in 2001 in memory of Jonathan Tarr who died in a tragic auto accident at the age of 17. Jonathan attended a nontraditional high school offering alternative education curriculum, and although he did not live long enough to fulfill his dreams, his legacy lives on through the Windows of Opportunity Scholarships, workshops and resources provided to middle to underserved students not usually targeted for academic assistance with post secondary education.
