Background:

Toni Pope was still a teenager when her vocal coach mom began giving her singing lessons. In San Francisco, she trained as an opera singer, before moving to Berlin, Germany, from 1997 to 2002 to further her education in esoteric and experimental music. Her unusual vocal phrasing encompasses several offbeat styles, including microtonal, multiphonic, and diatonic singing. “Microvoice tones emphasize vocalizing the space between the notes,” she says on her website.

The avant-garde nature of her deep-voice singing is informed by her metaphysical studies. Besides researching the singing traditions of Siberian shamans, she has also studied Mongolian overtone- and undertone techniques, African guttural vocals, and Inuit Katajag singing. Her day job involves counseling and mentoring disadvantaged youth for a city-funded organization.
