Background:

Mariachi Chula Vista is a Mariachi program running in 12 of the 20 schools in the Sweetwater Union High School district, between Chula Vista and the Mexican border. The program is headed by Mark Fogelquist, who has been a teacher at Chula Vista Junior High and Chula Vista High since 2001.

An ensemble usually featuring 16 musicians, Mariachi Chula Vista has won first place at five major mariachi competitions since 2004. A 2005 New York Times article about public school mariachi programs featured a long segment on the Chula Vista student ensemble.
