One Columnist Wasn't Fooled by Paterno's, Penn State's Feigned Piety
In my opinion, Tom Cushman was the best sports columnist the U-T ever had. Tim Sullivan had a similar style to Cushman. Steve Bisheff was very good also. Bud Poliquin had a unique style and you either liked it or hated it -- no middle of the road.— July 15, 2012 8:51 p.m.
UT Bringing in VP of Sports
Don, When Lynch became second in command I told you that Posner was on limited time because of his negative columns about the sports talk radio stations. You never know who will be your boss someday. Remember, they made Kevin Acee a columnist and after he was in place they got rid of Tim Sullivan. Sounds like Posner is next. Where did Brent Schrotenboer go? I agree that he is a good writer. Much of his reporting dealt with legal issues and a lot of dirt was made public about athletes. Do you think that someone complained to Lynch? Schrotenboer covered Bob Knight at Texas Tech and was able to get along with Knight. If he couldn't get along with Lynch, what does that say about Lynch?— July 4, 2012 10 a.m.

Don, I thought Neil Morgan's firing was because of something he said that was supposed to be kept secret. That's why David went along with the firing. I'm sure you know what I am talking about, but I don't want to go into detail.— June 4, 2012 9:23 p.m.
Tim Sullivan Tells His Side of the Story
I saw Tim Sullivan's response in the previous story. Since Tim is reading this blog I want him to know that I always considered him the best writer on the sport staff. His style was similar to Tom Cushman's. The worst sportswriter in UT history was Barry Lorge. When I worked at the UT, it was almost impossible to get fired because the Copley regime was afraid of lawsuits. Under the current management, the employees will probably vote to re-certify the union. Manchester and Lynch will have forced this on themselves.— June 4, 2012 8:51 p.m.

Don, Who else at the UT is on thin ice? I'm sure you are glad that you didn't have work under the present management. I know you butted heads with the Copley management.— June 4, 2012 6:44 a.m.

Don, I agree with dmerz70's previous comment. Why would you run the column if you don't agree with it to the point that you would fire the columnist? Tim Sullivan was the best sportswriter at the UT. Sullivan's columns were well researched. Unlike John Sinor's of yesteryear. I've mentioned this before, but this is another example of what can happen with no union (Newspaper Guild). If the Guild was still around, Tom Blair and Tim Sullivan could not be fired on the spot for no legitamate reason. If Clarence Darrow was still alive he would take on the UT.— June 3, 2012 6:57 p.m.
Tom Blair Laid Off by UT
Don, Did Tom Blair's original departure from the UT have something to do with the appointment of Karin Winner?— April 29, 2012 9:26 a.m.
Tom Blair Laid Off by UT
Don, Blair's column was average. Diane Bell's columns are the worst thing in the paper. Logan Jenkins' column is a waste of space. At least they are not paid as much as Burl Stiff was. Posner must not be sleeping well at nights. Supposedly, Lee Hacksaw Hamilton had something to do with the firing of former tv radio sportwriter Fritz Quindt. Posner obviously did not pay attention.— April 28, 2012 6:25 p.m.
Tom Blair Laid Off by UT
Don, I'm sure the new ownership didn't like Blair. With John Lynch as second in command the UT seems to be beefing up the sports section. They now have three sports columnists. I'm sure this is due to Lynch being a sports guy. The next guy out could be Sports Editor Jay Posner, who in the past wrote many articles critical of the sports talk shows and their hosts. Remember that John Lynch owned one of the sports stations. Posner is a good sportswriter, but his past feud with the sports stations could end up costing him his job, like Tom Blair.— April 27, 2012 8:19 p.m.
Rumor: U-T Sale Imminent
Don: In the past ten years or so, there has been a running feud between some sports talk show hosts (John Lynch has owned different stations during this time) and the UT. The main feud has been between Lee "Hacksaw" Hamilton and Jay Posner, who wrote the stories. Posner is currently the Sports Editor. If Lynch was ever involved in the feud with Posner in the past, Posner must not be sleeping well since the anouncement of the sale.— November 20, 2011 12:52 p.m.
