Escondido: The ruling white minority
Illegal water dumping photo? Shall we instead wait for the mosquitos to hatch?— April 6, 2013 1:36 a.m.
Escondido: The ruling white minority
The trend in much of the USA is toward a "latinizing" of the culture. Escondido is getting there faster and earlier. One interesting facet of Latin society is the very strong sense of family, but unfortunately, that sense does not reach beyond the extended family into a concept of the community as a whole. Why, I don't know. But the evidence is abundant. Latins participate less in civic affairs, support public charities as a lower rate, Latins are just not clamoring to do the "entry-level" political work (like water boards, school district boards, zoning advisory panels). But never fear, there are getting to be less and less "old white guys", so Latin/Hispanic majorities are inevitable. It will be interesting, if by that time, minorities suddenly cease to be important, or if a whole new set of minorities beset the Latin majority. From what I have seen of Latin society, there is a poor track record of how Latin majorities treat their own minorities. Will that attitude be repeated? We should watch how Escondido shows us the path ahead.— April 6, 2013 1:21 a.m.
Has fear of crime kept you from visiting Mexico?
FWIW. I don't feel safe enough in the frontier area to drive Tijuana to Ensenada like I regularly used to do, same for San Felipe. I'm not specifically paranoid, just cautious about blundering into something where no witnesses is the preferred outcome. I still feel comfortable about Tecate; it still feels relatively innocent there. Last year, I drove along the USA side from Del Rio to El Paso, and the subjective fear along there is even stronger than what you hear in San Diego.— April 6, 2013 12:57 a.m.
The ACLU, Qualcomm, and cash
I suppose when a city sells its soul, in the form of the name of its major public sports stadium, then there can be no complaint when the buyer plays around with his new toy. Besides, what's in a name? San Diego Stadium would smell as sweet, and be equally functional, if called Jack Murphy, Qualcom, Snapdragon or The Magnificent Heavenly Irwin Bowl.— April 6, 2013 12:43 a.m.
The ACLU, Qualcomm, and cash
The ACLU would toot a different tune if those H1B visas covered lawyers. The USA needs affordable legal services, and there are thousands of Indian lawyers yearning for their rightful places in La Jolla or Rancho San Diego.— April 6, 2013 12:35 a.m.
