Serra Mesa – outsiders easily get lost

Mobley Street, Jewish deli, sushi restaurant, Ruffin Canyon, aviation gas, the bus that goes through

Serra Mesa (Salvatore Filippone)
  • New generations in Serra Mesa

  • That first southbound walk home from Wegeforth Elementary, back in '68, was long and hot, each shadow on Mobley Street a refuge. For a transplanted fourth-grader, it was an arduous half-mile trek. These days, I never break a sweat on the drive back to my family home.

  • Brine, smoke, and peppery crust

  • I found myself within range of a New York Jewish deli in Serra Mesa. Spelling its name in all caps, CARVE bills itself as a “modern deli,” Built into the ground floor of a multi-story residential complex across the street from Montgomery Field on Aero Drive, the casual breakfast and lunch spot has the look of a modern cafeteria.

  • Local activists in Serra Mesa are rehabilitating Ruffin Canyon

  • "Think globally, act locally." The Friends of Ruffin Canyon group in Serra Mesa have taken this slogan to heart by launching a prototypical effort to preserve one of San Diego's several dozen undeveloped urban canyons.

  • As aviation-gas lead drops over Serra Mesa...

  • Usually when people complain about small regional airports, the issue is noise. But Serra Mesa resident Gary Keller is worried about lead poisoning, and a California health coalition — supported by EPA research — says his concerns are valid.

  • Disenfranchised bus passenger

  • On June 25, as the MTS 928 bus she was riding on Aero Drive approached her destination, she noticed that a large white van was trying to squeeze a right turn in ahead of the bus as it began the same turn onto Murphy Canyon Drive.

  • Sushi fans head to Serra Mesa

  • You have to want to go to a sushi bar such as Kokoro. Apologies to Serra Mesa residents, but this place isn’t near anything. Chef/owner Akio Ishito claims “many Japanese” seek out his restaurant, and the non-Japanese sushi nerds who may consider Sushi Tadokoro’s location next to that liquor store in Old Town much too mainstream seem to like it.
