Rob Thorsen plays benefit For Music in Schools

Monday 6
The jazz week begins with a free, noon-time concert by the Gilbert Castellanos Trio at the Athenaeum Music & Arts Library (1008 Wall Street.) All ages… Pianist Mikan Zlatkovich plays “acoustic fusion” with a trio at Eddie V’s Seaport Village (789 W. Harbor Drive) at 6 p.m.

Wednesday 8
Guitarist Peter Sprague plays in duo with vocalist Emily Elbert at the L’ Auberge Inn (1540 Camino Del Mar) at 7:30 p.m. No cover… Gilbert Castellanos has two gigs at Panama 66 (1450 El Prado) beginning at 6 p.m. when he hosts the Young Lions Series this week featuring the International Academy of Jazz Students of Kamau Kenyatta. At 8:30, Castellanos leads the weekly jam session with Joshua White and Rob Thorsen. No cover, musicians are invited to bring their instruments and artists are encouraged to bring their paintbrushes… Vocalist Leonard Patton duets with pianist Ed Kornhauser at the La Valencia Hotel (1132 Prospect Street) from 6 to 10 p.m. No cover.

Thursday 9
The Het Hat Club play Harbor Music Hall (1506 India Street) at 7:30 p.m. for a $10 cover… Trumpeter Bill Caballero leads the Latin Jazz Jam session at Border X Brewing (2181 Logan Avenue) at 7 p.m.

Friday 10
Peter Sprague leads a trio with bassist Bob Magnusson and saxophonist Tripp Sprague to play the Happy Hour at the Handlery Hotel (950 Hotel Circle North) from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. No cover, no minimum, validated parking… The Fred Benedetti Trio celebrates the music of George Harrison at Dizzy’s (1717 Morena Boulevard). The concert starts at 8 p.m. and will run you $15 cash at the door… Gilbert Castellanos presents Jazz at the Westgate (1055 Second Avenue) leading a trio at 8 p.m. No cover, but there is a $20 food/drink minimum.

Saturday 11
Vocalist Allison Adams Tucker’s Saturday Spotlight at the Westgate Plaza Bar (1055 Second Avenue) presents Language of Love with the Weller Trio: Danny Weller on bass, Charlie Weller on drums, and Bob Weller on piano at 8 p.m. No cover, $20 food/drink minimum… Louis Valenzuela and Nina Leilani perform as Humankind at Café 21 (2736 Adams Avenue) from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. No cover.

Sunday 12
The Rob Thorsen Quartet are doing a benefit for his Music in the Schools program down at Bread & Salt (1955 Julian Avenue), featuring Gilbert Castellanos, Bob Boss, and Richard Sellers from 2 to 4 p.m. VIP tickets are available for $45, general admission runs $15, students and seniors get in for $8… The Justin Grinnell Trio adds vocalist Ruby Presnell with Melonie Grinnell on piano and Richard Sellers on drums at Grossmont College Recital Hall, Building 26, room 220 (8800 Grossmont College Drive) at 6:30 p.m. Tickets run $10 for general admission, $8 seniors, $5 students.
