A welcoming, resort-like feel in La Jolla’s Muirlands neighborhood

“Sublime seclusion, luxurious ambience, and phenomenal design for welcoming family and friends are yours in this magnificent gated estate,” promises the Zillow opening for our stop this week at 6001 La Jolla Scenic Drive South, a seven-bedroom, seven-bath mansion occupying more than 7500 square feet of living space in the Muirlands neighborhood of southern La Jolla. “Seductive contemporary aesthetics, [the] finest natural materials, and modern technological systems are maximized throughout the main residence and detached guest house,” the listing continues. Let’s have a look, shall we?

The first photo in the listing is a sunset shot of the black-bottomed pool; there’s a square gazebo open to the spa in the middle. Light features are trained on a stand of poolside palms and some other trees in the background, lending a resort-like feel to the backyard. It’s a little over the top, but you can’t tell me you wouldn’t enjoy an evening cocktail out here.

An aerial shot follows, along with one of a perfectly manicured front lawn and circular driveway. The “almost two acres of lush, specimen-planted grounds” certainly afford us some privacy here, in a spot that is a bit more than a mile as the gull flies from the cliffs of Hermosa or the beach at Windansea. (If we were closer to the ocean, this much space would command even more of a premium than it already does.)

Dual doors, which we’re told are made of solid teak (as are the window frames and the flooring), lead us through the entry foyer and into a living room with giant sliding glass doors, which in turn lead us out to the patio and poolside cabana. Off to one side, there’s a casual dining area with an 800-gallon aquarium built into a wood-lined wall. Beyond is the “serious kitchen with two refrigerators and two dishwashers.” Moving on, we find a more casual living space with a wall-mounted TV that dwarfs the fireplace with which it grudgingly shares a wall. We also see a more formal dining room and a bedroom with its own sitting area in front of another fireplace — this one reportedly carved from a single slab of onyx. In the main suite’s bathroom, there’s a freestanding tub that looks like a hollowed-out boulder – the listing tells us the tub was literally hand-carved from a solid hunk of granite. Impressive! There’s also a “steam shower with dual shower heads and custom body wash system,” which is not pictured but I envision as being something like one of those gas station car washes you park in while a machine moves back and forth, alternately soaping and rinsing you.

The “state-of-the-art acoustically-engineered theater” with Crestron automated controls has what looks like a full bar in back, plus three rows of leather stadium seating plopped in front of the 19-foot screen. There’s a whole paragraph just dedicated to listing the A/V components that went into the build, so I’m going to assume that means we should be very impressed with what’s going on here. And while we’re on the subject of tech, let’s also note that the estate has a fully automated indoor/outdoor audio system, automatic window shades, fiber optic wiring to provide commercial-grade Wi-Fi, remote controlled lighting, full surveillance and security system, and automatic Toto toilets. To keep everything running if the grid goes down, there’s both a solar array and 5000-kilowatt diesel generator.

Moving on once again, we find a massage room, small home gym, and guest bedroom. Then we move back outside, where “air, water, and fire all take their place in the vast grounds.” Though the residence was constructed in 2005, we’re told many of the palms used for the landscape are more than 50 years old, while “picturesque specimen plantings surround the vanishing edge pool and spa with laminar fountains.” We also see the “charming children’s playhouse” surrounded by shrubbery, along with some more aerial shots to highlight the guest house and 1275-square foot garage with granite floors and a six-door commercial refrigerator.

Public records list Harry Rady, an asset manager whose LinkedIn profile says his specialty is “focusing on high net worth investors,” as the current owner of the estate. The property has been on- and off-market several times dating back to 2018, with asking prices as high as $14,990,000 and as low as $7,895,000. The current listing, which went live in late December, seeks a sale price of $9.8 million.
