New releases from Boostive, Plunderbund, Buck-O-Nine, Creature & the Woods, the Frights, more

After releasing a series of EPs, electronic hip-hop collective Boostive will drop their debut full-length Cream Supreme at 710 Beach Club on April 5. “The band will be featuring many of the vocalists from the record” says guitarist-bassist Seiji Komo. “The album features 14 musicians from all over California, and we have a four-piece horn section…[it] was created with the intention of representing our live sound, with a full ten-piece band recorded live in the studio. We recorded a majority of the album live to tape at the famous Eastwest Studios in Hollywood and did additional overdubs at Rarified Studios in San Diego. We did all the effect dubbing at Chubb Dub Studios right here in Ocean Beach.” The bill includes Lavender Fields.

The release party for Plunderbund’s self-titled debut album happens April 7 at Navajo Live in San Carlos. “Our current fans will be familiar with most of the songs on the album, but ‘Photograph’ is an entirely new tune that will make its first public appearance,” says Daniel Westrick, who sings and plays guitar in the alt-power pop trio. “Since no one can ever hear the lyrics in bar gigs, our songs appear be upbeat, danceable, melodic pop rock, but maybe with the album release fans will get a chance to experience our dark, curmudgeony side. We’ll be releasing a series of music videos beginning in May with ‘Matter of Fact,’ which humorously explores our country’s difficult relationship with reality.”

The Frights went to Santa Ana last September to record Live at the Observatory, due April 12 and so far preceded by a single and video for “Whatever (Live).” Featuring 14 songs sampling all previous releases from the surf-punk rockers, the support tour includes their first appearance at the Coachella Festival. Group founders Mikey Carnevale (vocals, guitar) and Richard Dotson (bass) have said that they were first inspired to form the band after seeing a show at Santa Ana's Observatory.

Noah C. Lekas will read from his book Saturday Night Sage, published by local Blind Owl Records, for the Record Store Day/April 13 release party at Vinyl Junkies, where Blind Owl act Creature & the Woods will perform a release gig for their new 4-song EP Joshua Tree. "Everyone should join us for this event because it is a celebration of art and community here in San Diego," says Creature guitarist-singer Daniel Cervantes, who also heads up Blind Owl. "Both Joshua Tree and Saturday Night Sage are collaborations and cross pollinations that we want everyone to know about...DJ Alex Lexicon Devil is spinning vinyl records right after, and we'll have a special giveaway for the RSD event, one of the 18x24 exclusive screen prints with artwork by Alan Forbes."

Lizzie Wann’s book of poetry, The Hospice Bubble & Other Devastating Affirmations, will be released by Puna Press on April 17 at the Whistle Stop, where five poets will stage readings and Lindsay White will play with her band the White Lies. Speaking of White, the former Lovebird was recently selected to perform at the 34th Annual Tucson Folk Festival in Tucson, Arizona, a two-day festival kicking off April 6.

Ten years since their last full-length, ska rockers Buck-O-Nine finally have a sixth studio album, Fundaymental, due via Cleopatra Records April 19. In addition to downloads and CDs, a red vinyl edition is also planned.
