San Diego water emergencies in 2017 that weren't

Pappy's Point. Lifeguard responds to Pappy’s Point for a reporting on group of inexperienced swimmers.

July 24

  • Boating: 911 call for a vessel accident off Ski Beach. Lifeguard boat unit responds, turns out not to be a vessel accident. A PWC was overturned and being harassed by two other PWC’s. No violations witnessed. Lifeguard makes warnings on the two PWC’s in question.

July 26

  • Enforcement: Tow Boat US operator requests assistance for an aggressive boat owner whose vessel has sunk. Rescued owner is dropped off at the dock at Dana and contracts with Tow Boat US for salvage.

July 27

  • Enforcement: RP states “hundreds of people are jumping from a rope” at Pappy’s Point. Lifeguard units, SDPD respond and disperse crowd.

July 29

  • USCG requests a response to a call they received regarding person(s) harassing seals at La Jolla Cove. Lifeguard unit responds, investigates, and is unable to locate.

  • Enforcement/Boating: Unoccupied panga on the beach in southern Del Mar. Sherriff s notified.

August 4

  • Boating: EPRB activation somewhere near Dana Landing. Lifeguard units, USCG air unit search area. Unable to locate.

August 6

  • Boating: Boat aground at Tourmaline. Reporting Person states 3 occupants ran ashore and up Sea Ridge Dr. Lifeguard units respond. SDPD, Coast Guard and Border Patrol are notified. Lifeguard confirms no occupants onboard and secures boat. Border Patrol on scene. Lifeguards clear. Department of Homeland Security going to make plans for vessel removal.
  • Medical: Man down at 5100 Brighton St. Lifeguard, emergency, medical units respond. Unable to locate.
  • Boating: Vessel accident at Ski Beach. Reporting person cites 9 year-old female, traumatic injury. Lifeguard, medical units respond. Medics evaluate patient. No Injuries. Both parties exchange info.

September 4

  • Medical: Tower 21 reports an unconscious 49 year-old male and request medics. Lifeguard and medical respond. No aid, patient sleeping.

September 6

  • Medical: Call box hang-up with incoherent voices in background. Lifeguard and UCSD PD respond. UCSD PD transports to unknown location.

September 9

  • Smoke, possible boat fire near Campland by the Bay. Multiple lifeguard boat units and emergency on scene. Not a boat fire. Reported flag burning ceremony on the street.

September 19

  • Boating: Lifeguards respond to Orchard St. for a report of a person who can’t stay up on their stand up paddle board. Clear upon arrival.

September 23

  • Ringing Alarm at 850 Coast Blvd, Casa Lifeguard Station. Emergency and lifeguards on scene. Area checks clear. Alarm reset.

September 27

  • Swimming: 911 call for people yelling in the water at 333 Coast Blvd. Lifeguard shore, boat and air units respond. Search of land and water checks clear, noise determined to be sea lion.

September 30

  • Enforcement: Disturbance, 2 suspects in the water at north Pacific Beach. Lifeguards respond. No fight according to surfers interviewed after exiting the water. SDPD and lifeguards clear.

October 1

  • Swimming: Lobster diver calling for help at South Boomers. SDPD along with lifeguard shore, boat and air units respond. Lifeguard meets with reporting person and deploys another lifeguard with rescue board. Lifeguards clear the water of lobster divers and all swimmers are accounted for. It was confirmed by lifeguards there was a diver calling for his brother and not a call of distress.

October 23

  • Lifeguard boat unit reports a 4 ½ foot, 200 lb. deceased sea turtle off Campland by the Bay. National Marine Fisheries contacted. National Marine Fisheries requested the carcass be left on the shore at Campland.

October 24

  • Lifeguard and SDPD units respond to PD request in locating “check the welfare” female on rock at Bermuda Beach. Helicopter unit responds to help search. Unable to locate. PD calls clear.

October 27

  • Boating: Boat fire east bay across from De Anza Mobile Home Park. Lifeguards respond. No vessel fire; large bonfire on Fiesta Island.
  • Boating: Vessel dead in the water 18 miles off Mission Bay channel. Lifeguards and USCG respond. USCG handles and lifeguards stand down as it appeared to be a suspicious vessel.
