Life and death and statistics

Some points of deadly interest

“Autopsies are required in approximately 75 percent of the cases we examine.”

There are many statistics in the big city, and the San Diego County medical examiner’s office is seemingly on top of them all. Notes the office’s annual report: “With San Diego County’s land area of 4261 square miles, 86 miles of border, 70 miles of coastline, and a diverse geography including deserts, mountains, forests, mesas and coastal areas, and an equally diverse population of more than 3.2 million residents and 19,000–21,000 deaths recorded each year, the Medical Examiner’s Office investigates some 8700 cases annually, or approximately 725 cases/month.”

Among other points of deadly interest, “Autopsies are required in approximately 75 percent of the cases we examine,” and “a common misconception is that an autopsy will render a body unsuitable for viewing in a funeral after the procedure. This is far from true. In fact, changes made during an autopsy are easily hidden by a mortuary so that the individual can be viewed by loved ones.”

The City of San Diego is searching for an artist to adorn its new East Fortuna Staging Area Field Station Building to be built next year at Mission Trails Regional Park. At an estimated $54,000, the artwork will join the city’s Civil Art Collection.

Per bid documents, “The City collects artworks that demonstrate the creativity and innovation practiced in the arts; that stimulate discussion and the exchange of ideas; that balance urbanization and development with humanizing elements; that honor the history and heritage of San Diego and its citizens; and/or that reflect the character and diversity of San Diego’s region while incorporating a global perspective.”

However, news releases are carefully monitored, says the notice. “The Artist agrees that, if selected, the City will review and approve all news releases,” which are to be “submitted in writing to Commission staff member. Staff will review and provide feedback and/or approval in a timely manner.”
