Sizable chest

Alvarez serves the leftovers

David Alvarez

San Diego City Council Democrat David Alvarez, who collected a sizable war chest to back his June bid and those of his allies to obtain spots on the party’s central committee, is deploying the leftovers to other political battles.

On August 31, he handed out $1000 to the campaign for Yes on Proposition I — the controversial measure to renew San Diego High School’s tenure on a portion of city-owned land that formerly was part of Balboa Park. He came up with the same amount for the local Democratic Party. Records show Alvarez collected a total of $44,100 for the fund during the first half of the year, including $10,000 from Suncoast Financial Mortgage, the firm run by ousted Republican port commissioner David Malcolm.
