Gobbling up real estate

John Moores

Ex–Padres owner John Moores, who is helping the initiative drive of lawyer Cory Briggs to raise hotel taxes that could aid siting of a new Chargers stadium near Moores’s property downtown, is also busy building in his adopted home town of Rancho Santa Fe. According to the agenda of the San Dieguito Planning Group, his JMI Realty has applied for a “Subdivision Map for Condominium Purposes: 13 existing units, 2 will be demolished, the remaining 11 will be converted to condominiums, and 5 new units will be built.”

Meanwhile, L.A. Rams owner Stan Kroenke, the super-rich Missourian whose wife is an heir to the Walmart fortune, is about to gobble up his biggest piece of real estate yet. According to the Land Report, Kroenke has made a deal to buy the 535,000-acre Waggoner Ranch in west Texas. “We are honored to assume ownership of the Waggoner — a true Texas and American landmark — and are deeply committed to continuing the proud legacy of W.T. ‘Tom’ Waggoner, his family, and his descendants. Our gratitude to them and to the many parties involved in this process is immense. We will continue to preserve and protect this uniquely American treasure.”

A plan for the Spanos family to move the Chargers into Kroenke’s new Rams stadium in L.A. remains in limbo pending the San Diego stadium-building attempt with Moores.
