Unpeaceful goings-on

A non-profit founded by Democratic state senator Steve Peace has just registered to lobby in San Diego. The Independent Voter Project is pushing for a charter amendment to require the top two vote-getters in city primaries to advance to a general election run-off.

Under the current system, a candidate who gets over 50 percent of the vote is declared the winner in the June primary, for which voter turnout has been consistently lighter than November. Republican Mark Kersey, who won his reelection battle in this year’s primary, champions the status quo, claiming that voters, “are quite happy that the city elections are done in June so that we’ll not turn around and be bothering them again in November alongside the congressional, and presidential and state candidates.”

But Kersey reportedly remains agnostic regarding a plan to build a new downtown stadium for the Chargers adjacent to real estate controlled by Peace’s boss, ex–Padres owner and Rancho Santa Fe mega-millionaire John Moores.
