Mayor Faulconer kills proposal to purge emails

Says open government necessary

Mayor Kevin Faulconer today (March 18) rescinded a proposal to eliminate city emails after one year.

People were shocked to find that officials who rely on information trails — such as auditor Eduardo Luna and ethics commissioner Stacey Fulhorst — had signed the administrative document, known as 90-67. It's beleved to have originated in the office of city attorney Jan Goldsmith, who has much to hide.

Faulconer originally said he would weigh open-government requirements against the cost of preservation. Bloggers on the Reader site said the cost would be minimal these days. Faulconer says he wants "to increase openness and transparency at City Hall."
