Buzzing up

KPBS is giving itself a big pat on the back for what it calls its “exclusive coverage of the San Diego Mayor Bob Filner story.” A glossy pamphlet put out by the station, which is run by San Diego State University, says, “Time and again, as the story developed over many weeks, KPBS was trusted to air exclusive interviews from victims, broke developments in the case, and maintained journalistic integrity while covering a sensitive news story.”

The latter line is believed by close observers to make ironic reference to the station’s continued dependence on stalwart Filner foe and Qualcomm billionaire Irwin Jacobs for much of its funding. … Until recently, the most famous San Diego donor to the gubernatorial hopes of the GOP’s Neel Kashkari has been Ralph “Buzz” Woolley, the anti-union financier and chair of the Voice of San Diego news and opinion website. Now comes Dale Yahnke, the self-styled investment advisor at Dowling & Yahnke, who already kicked in $10,000 back in January, with another $5000. …

Brian Maienschein’s Republican assembly re-election bid has of late received $1000 from Koch Industries, run by the conservative Koch brothers from Wichita, Kansas.
