Liberal Democrat Bob Filner has been ousted as mayor, and the September 5 meeting of the Mexican American Business and Professional Association appeared to reflect the city’s new order, featuring two of the city’s insiders. Both are big backers of privatizing city services by handing out contracts to influential friends and associates. First up, ex-GOP mayor Jerry Sanders, now running the county’s Chamber of Commerce, who was billed as discussing “building San Diego’s economy through job creation and enhanced contract opportunities for all.” Next came Democratic city councilman Todd Gloria. According to the email: “As the city of San Diego forges ahead with new contracting programs, streamlined permitting processes, and small business opportunities, top employers are doing their part to help Small, Disadvantaged businesses build a sustainable foundation for reciprocal success.”
