No kids, we're drinking

Todd Gloria held “Meet the Council President” cocktail hour at the retro Sycamore Den in Normal Heights.

It probably wasn’t as exciting as a clash in city council chambers between mayor Bob Filner and city councilman Todd Gloria, and the booze wasn’t on the house, but nothing beats Adams Avenue for homespun hospitality, San Diego style. Such was the case last week when Gloria held “Cocktails with your Council President” at the new Sycamore Den watering hole near 34th Street. “Summer time is in full swing, it’s Pride Week, and hard work continues at City Hall,” said an emailed invite from Gloria’s official city hall account. “I hope you can take the time to join me for cocktails in Normal Heights this Thursday evening to learn the latest news and provide me with your concerns, questions, and input.” Added the invitation: “Please note that Sycamore Den is a 21 and up venue.” … Someone at the Del Mar Thoroughbred Club really likes Kamala Harris. The outfit that has the lucrative state lease to run the summer horse races by the sea gave $3500 to the Democratic attorney general’s reelection bid on June 21. That compares with the $1000 checks the track spread around to various legislators of both parties, including San Diego Republicans Brian Maienschein and Mark Wyland. Local Democrats Marty Block, Lorena Gonzalez, and Shirley Weber had to settle for just $500 apiece.
