City-hall lobbyist Matt Peterson has a good customer in former GOP presidential nominee Mitt Romney. According to a recently filed disclosure report, the house-remodeling permission specialist was paid a healthy $25,191 by Romney and his wife Ann during the second quarter of this year to get a city permit to “demolish existing home and build a new home at 311 Dunemere, La Jolla.” Besides contacting city Development Services department employees, Peterson went right to the top, or what apparently passes for it these days: city attorney Jan Goldsmith. Other clients did not prove to be as lucrative as the Romneys. Dave and Lois Butterfield paid $6406 to get permits to demolish two homes, “execute a lot-tie agreement,” and build a mega-mansion on a Calmut Avenue site. That project was so big, it required meetings between Peterson and now-embattled mayor Bob Filner and erstwhile staffer Alan Jones, as well as Goldsmith.
