Flying Coach Fisher

Steve Fisher enjoyed free travel home from New Orleans courtesy of Qualcomm’s Steve Altman.

Qualcomm vice chairman Steve Altman has kicked in for the cause of San Diego State University basketball by picking up a travel tab for head coach Steve Fisher. According to an undated disclosure statement posted online by university vice president Mary Ruth Carleton, Fisher got a free trip home from an April 2 game in New Orleans. The tab was valued at $350, but the filing doesn’t say whether the trip was made by commercial airline or private jet. In addition to Altman’s gift to the school’s athletics program, Jeff Jacobs, the son of Qualcomm founder Irwin Jacobs — a big donor to KPBS, the SDSU-controlled public broadcasting operation — treated Jim Sterk, the university’s director of athletics, to a return trip from Las Vegas on March 10 “after attending the Mountain West Conference for Men’s and Women’s basketball games,” according to another undated disclosure filing signed by Carleton. The journey, again by unspecified means, was valued at $200.
