Reader contest winner gathers more fans

Felt as if I was strolling the streets of Hillcrest with you

I feel most like myself when I’m just out walking, either alone or with my favorite companion — who doesn’t happen to be my mother.

The joy your article brought me

Literary masterpiece! Thank you Georgeanne for writing such a moving and thought- provoking article. As a long time resident and walker of North Park and surrounding neighborhoods, I totally connected with your story. I too have watched this old- school charming neighborhood transform, and I share the fear that the affordable apartment I have resided in for 13 years will be sold to a developer to create more “unaffordable living.”

My dad taught me as a kid to enjoy each day as it comes and not live with the anxiety that the sky is falling. These days, that’s tough, but I took great pleasure in reading your article, and I am grateful for the joy that it brought me. Keep on keeping on and I hope to cross paths with you someday as we stroll through this beautiful concrete jungle.

Thanks and congrats

A thank you and congratulations to Georgeanne Hotchkiss and A.T., first and second place winners of the Neighborhood Writing Contest. Both stories brought tear0s to my eyes and were a pleasure to read. A thank you to the Reader as well for hosting the contest and bringing us these beautifully talented local voices.

SDG&E announces rate hike shortly after posting record profits

SD on the QT, Mar. 29, 2024

Support the Power San Diego initiative to replace SDG&E. powersandiego.us Find a petition to sign near you if you are a City of San Diego registered voter – we can get out from under our corporate overlords and reduce our electricity rates. Every non-profit utility in California and there are dozens – every one has lower rates than what we’re stuck with.

-Take back the power

ROFL. It kills me corporate executives with bloated salaries don’t believe other people could do their job for better and cheaper and that removing the investment profits would somehow disrupt the laws of engineering.

Power San Diego all day long. The future is Public Power. Save money, save the planet.

San Diego’s Uptown Planners challenged by renters from Vibrant Uptown

Neighborhood News,

Why is Uptown Planners filled with boomers?

-Boomer Bammer

I think it’s primarily because older homeowners tend to be Boomers and that’s who is on Uptown Planners.

Everything in Hillcrest is fleeting

Cover Stories, Mar. 20, 2024

Wow, that was a clear-eyed, well-written piece. It flowed so nicely and just a great writing style. Best thing I’ve seen in this rag in a loooong time. Georgeanne , I hope you continue to write.

Oh Georgeanne. I wish I could meet you, as our lives are so much alike. Anyway, I loved your story, it spoke to my soul and maybe by some miracle, we may cross paths someday. It is possible, as I take my elderly mom to the same thrift stores you frequent as well.

Congrats on winning the writing contest. I almost felt like I was strolling the streets of Hillcrest with you. Anyway, I just wanted to inform you that yes, SD police has an outreach team. It’s actually a lot more damaging than helpful. If you refuse their “help” which is bed bug infested shelters with crazies, they will give you a ticket. It starts off as an infraction, then becomes a misdemeanor, and eventually, they just arrest you.
