Caught thresher shark from surfboard at Windansea

Nixon library at Casa del Zorro

Friends Ross Zoerhoff and Lery Espinoza in Bahia Asuncion. Ross, here gifting Lery a nice yellowtail, was always one to share the wealth. He fished his SOT kayak well into his 70s.

Fish story vs. surf tale

Yes, I enjoyed the story (“Big Fish Small Boat,” Cover Story, Nov. 9). It reminded me of my younger brother Scott Cherry, who got his picture in Surfer magazine when he caught a 16-foot Thresher shark while fishing off of his 10-foot surfboard outside of Windansea Beach. It was an impressive feat but I had to tell him that I would rather be in Field and Stream magazine for my surfing ability then in Surfer magazine for my fishing ability.

The gory McGrory details

(“Alden Global’s bull riders and other investments besides the U-T”, Under the Radar, Nov. 8, 2023) Mister McGrory is also part owner of the former Copley compound at Casa del Zorro in Borrego Springs where I have trained for endurance. There is a fascinating small museum in the back lobby area depicting the history of President Nixon and his relationship with Mister Copley. Also, as side trivia, Mr. McGrory was a devoted tennis partner with Bill Winston the proprietor of Winstons in Ocean Beach and candidate for Congress in 1992.
