Location: Torrey Pines

Evan Harris was heading to the water when I caught up with him on a cloudy day in Torrey Pines. Harris finds himself at Torrey Pines often.

“I work at the towers here as a lifeguard and I’m teaching junior guards so I’m here a lot. There’s a pretty good break right out here, just in front of the bridge.”

“There are some spots that get a lot more crowded and it gets hectic, but I’m out here to have fun, caught a couple waves, and if it’s crowded, it’s crowded.”

Harris also surfs at Cardiff, Del Mar, and the beaches in Santa Cruz during the school year.

“I took surf lessons with this thing called Surf Sessions when I was six and I came out here on vacation. It was helpful, I think it lays down a good foundation. I think that a good instructor is helpful in learning the basics of surfing which goes along with the basics of surfing etiquette, so I think having a knowledgeable instructor is important.”
