“Tronc is hiring!” says a hopeful announcement regarding the oddly named newspaper chain newly posted on the website of builtinchicago.com. But ink-stained wretches, otherwise known as reporters, are not among those in high demand at the company, owner of the San Diego Union-Tribune. Instead, computer nerds rule, with six engineering openings.

“As a senior Android software engineer, you will help enhance troncX’s Android mobile applications for properties like the LA Times, Chicago Tribune, Baltimore Sun, and other publications,” says the job notice, omitting mention of the editorially challenged U-T. Also, “tronc is hiring a product manager to join our core product team in Los Angeles or Chicago. This role will collaborate with cross-functional stakeholders across the organization to drive the vision of our digital media products by developing strategies, managing product roadmaps, and leading the product development process to execution.”
