Verizon pushes Smart Cities

Verizon paid a city lobbyist to push their “Intelligent Video solution,” which seems to offer electricity savings as a component of a surveillance deal.

Verizon Wireless has paid the San Diego lobbying firm of MJE Marketing Services $30,000 to push for “approval of a public-private partnership for implementation of Verizon’s Smart Cities and Communities programs,” according to an October 19 MJE disclosure filing with the city clerk.

In addition to saving street-light energy, Verizon’s website says, “our Intelligent Video solution can capture high-quality footage and send it to authorized viewers for near real-time viewing, or maintain the video stream locally and in the cloud for longer-term storage.”
