Wednesday 4
Trumpeter Gilbert Castellanos begins a double-header evening at Panama 66 (1450 El Prado) when he hosts the Young Lions Series this week featuring high-school bassist Angelica Yume Pruitt at 6 p.m. At 8:30, he leads the jam session band with Irving Flores on piano, Rob Thorsen on bass, and 14-year-old Carmen Murray on drums. All-ages, no cover charge, no minimum… Vocalist Leonard Patton performs in duo with guitarist/vocalist Sahara Grim at the La Valencia Hotel (1132 Prospect Street) from 6 to 10 p.m. No cover charge.

Trumpeter Gary Rich presents First Thursday Jazz Jam with Jason Shattil on piano, Antar Martin on bass, and Fernando Gomez on drums at Bourre Southern Bistro (6523 University Avenue) from 6:30 to 9 p.m. No cover.

Friday 6
Bassist Rob Thorsen leads a trio with pianist Hugo Suarez and drummer Richard Sellers to play Holly Hofmann’s Happy Hour Series at the Handlery Hotel (950 Hotel Circle North) from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. No cover, validated parking… Gilbert Castellanos presents Jazz at the Westgate (1055 Second Avenue) with pianist Joshua White and bass TBD, at 8 p.m. No cover, but there is a $20 food/drink minimum.

Soul jazz guitarist/vocalist Steph Johnson has a new solo gig at the Remedy (8555 Station Village Lane) and you can catch her there from 7 to 9 p.m. for free.

Sunday 8
Saxophonist Anthony Ortega leads the weekly jam session at Mr. Peabody’s in Encinitas (136 Encinitas Boulevard) from 6 to 9 p.m. No cover charge.
