Cash rains on supe

A termed-out San Diego county supervisor who last month voted himself a $19,000 raise and a comparable hike in benefits is also tapping in to a five-figure campaign bank account left over from his final reelection bid.

The Fourth District’s Ron Roberts spent a portion of his remaining political money — collected for his 2014 reelection campaign — to buy himself an iPhone for $1153 at the Apple Store. He used a total of $363.36 to cover the phone bills from Verizon and paid $2558 to Bertrand at Mister A’s, the posh Uptown restaurant with a view, to host a September 11 “Visiting China Delegation Dinner.” $195 went for China travel insurance for a trip to Asia, along with $220 to cover “Vietnam visas” for himself and staff.

The supervisor’s expenses barely dented his political cash trove, which ended the year with $80,628 in the bank. The Roberts tally is eclipsed by fellow GOP supervisor Greg Cox, another vote for the supervisorial pay hike, who by December 31 of last year had squirreled away a grand total of $315,798 in unused campaign funds.
