Empowering young Muslims

And endorsing Democratic candidates

One of the county’s newer political campaign committees was registered by a Poway high school student.

A group of Muslim students from high schools around the county have set up a campaign committee to gather cash for political causes, according to an August 12 filing with the county registrar of voters. The purpose of San Diego Young Muslim Democrats is to “empower young Muslim Americans within the Democratic Party of San Diego,” the disclosure says.

Adds the group’s Facebook page: “We also aim to increase political activism amongst San Diego Muslim youth by endorsing and participating in campaign work for Democratic candidates, inviting speakers, holding monthly meetings, and facilitating the creation of a Muslim youth-run campaign presence during high profile elections.”

The group is headed by founder Luqmaan Bokhary, a junior at Poway’s Westview High, according to his LinkedIn page. “One of Luqmaan’s biggest goals in school is to advance Muslim rights and give Muslim students a voice on campus.”
