A window for Ocean Beach's Pac Shores? NO!

Back in September of this year, OBecians expressed concern about Pacific Shores — a Newport Avenue "dive bar," according to many — installing a front window.

Known for its darkness, black lights, and cave-like feel, Pac Shores has been the go-to watering hole for those looking for strong, cheap drinks that glow under the black lights.

The bar opened for business in December 1941 and is notorious for its darkness....so dark, it takes your eyes a minute to adjust when walking in...so dark that if you drink during the day, you feel like it's night...so dark that — oh, my god — NO, you can't put in a front window!

Though the window is definitely going in, nothing else is planned to change.

“The last thing we are going to do is change the look; it will still be dark, the theme will remain the same,” Keri-Ann, the owner of the bar, explained. “The front window will have a bar-top that matches the coffee table my uncle made in the '50s. This place is near and dear to my heart, since it belonged to my parents. So, I want to keep it as is,” she said.

“It’s an accordion window that can easily be opened and closed. Sometimes, when people walk by during the day, they’re not sure we’re open, so the window will be opened during the day, and at night it will be closed.”

The decision to install the window was made by the landlord and the property owner, Keri-Ann said. “Both sides had input, and we are looking forward to the positive change we’re hoping it brings. I promise, it will be the same bar.”

In September, the window panes were removed and then reinstalled, causing some confusion as to whether the window was really going to be installed.

“We had to take measurements and then find the right sized window, which we hope will be here soon, as we celebrate 75 years in Ocean Beach and are hosting our annual holiday event on December 10.”
