“Lobster and ice cream…lobster and ice cream…”

I’ve made no secret of my affection for a particular spicy lobster grilled cheese. When I heard Supernatural Sandwiches traded up to a larger storefront within its Miramar shopping strip, I found any excuse to be in the neighborhood. But I was actually there for a different sort of sandwich.

For the record, the new space is triple the size of Supernatural’s quickly overwhelmed former location, with great nautical décor and (pending license) a 14-tap craft beer bar. It’s much needed growth for the popular seafood sandwich maker, and congratulations to those guys.

Getting back to my real reason for visiting: macaron ice cream sandwiches. I recently came across a small local desserts outfit with a specialty I hoped to get to know better, and Supernatural is one of the few places to stock it.

To be clear, macarons are not the same thing as macaroons. Macaroons are flourless coconut cookies, sometimes dipped in chocolate and associated with Passover. Macarons are the vibrant, ultralight French cookie sandwiches filled with varied crèmes or jellies to create different flavor combinations.

Macarons tend to be fantastic, and since they usually mix and match flavors including chocolate, hazelnut, coffee, vanilla, pistachio, berry, and lemon, it’s fun to eat way too many of them in one sitting. It hadn’t occurred to me that they could be made better with ice cream.

It’s occurred to D’licious Desserts. Their ice cream sandwiches use slightly larger versions of the almond-flour cookie portions of macarons and put a thick puck of ice cream between them. In keeping with the macaron zeitgeist, they offer a couple of dozen interesting cookie/ice cream combos: churro Nutella, green tea Kit Kat, and strawberry lychee, for example.

The day I stopped by Supernatural, they were sold out of all but the blueberry cheesecake waffle sandwiches — maple waffle cookies with blueberry cheesecake ice cream. I missed the fun of making a choice, but it was hardly a hardship. The thing was delicious, even worth the reminder that I’m a little lactose intolerant. Which wasn’t helped by the lobster grilled cheese I also picked up. You know, since I was in the neighborhood. But to eat like this, I’ll live on the edge. It was the best lunch of my week.
