Danny Green Trio plus strings at Jazz Live

Tuesday 2
Jazz Live San Diego, sponsored by KSDS Jazz 88, kicks off the month of August with a performance by the Danny Green Trio with Justin Grinnell and Julien Cantelm plus a string quartet featuring Anika Skalova, Yumi Cho, Travis Maril, and Erica Erenyl at the Saville Theatre (14th & C Street). It is free to Jazz 88 members, $10 general admission. Doors open at 7:30.

Wednesday 3
Trumpeter Gilbert Castellanos has two gigs at Panama 66 (1450 El Prado) beginning at 6 p.m. when he hosts the Young Lions Series and continuing at 8:30 when he leads the jam session. All ages, no cover… The Jazz 88 Blues Jam goes down at Proud Mary’s Southern Bar & Grill (5500 Kearny Mesa Road), hosted by J. Otis Williams and guitarist Mark Augustin from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. No cover charge, family-friendly.

Thursday 4
Trumpeter Gary Rich leads a jam session with bassist Dean Hulett, pianist Jason Shatill, and drummer Matthew Smith at Bourré Southern Bistro (6523 University Avenue) from 6 to 9 p.m. No cover... The Steph Johnson Trio with Rob Thorsen and Fernndo Gomez play the Westgate Poolside Series (1055 Second Avenue) from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. $20 food/drink minimum.

Friday 5
Trombonist/vocalist Lizzi Trumbore does the Happy Hour at the Handlery Hotel (950 Hotel Circle North) leading a trio with Peter Sprague and Harley Magsino from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. No cover, no minimum, validated parking… L.A. vocalist Sara Gazarek plays in duo with pianist Josh Nelson at Dizzy’s (4275 Mission Bay Drive) from 8 p.m. Tickets will run you $15 at the door... The Steph Johnson Trio with Rob Thorsen and Fernando Gomez play at CB Richard Ellis Plaza (550 West C Street) from 11:45 a.m. to 1:15 p.m. No cover.

Saturday 6
The Gary Rich Quartet, with Irving Flores, Dean Hulett, and Matt Hall, plays a brunch set at Harbor Breakfast (3502 India Street) from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. No cover… The Joshua White Trio with Dean Hulett and Duncan Moore play Dizzy’s at 8 p.m. Pony up $20 at the door.

Sunday 7
The Matt Smith Neu Jazz Trio hosts the Sunday jam session at 98 Bottles (2400 Kettner Boulevard) from 2:30 to 5 p.m. No cover, but you must be 21+ to enter.
