So many movie openings

Cemetery of Splendour, Everybody Wants Some!!, and more

Cemetery of Splendour

One thing that hasn’t been mentioned much in the yawping about the huge week two dropoff (69%!) for Batman v Superman: Yawn of Justice: there was practically nothing else to see last week — at least, not in terms of big new releases. The really good movie, Remember, opened in one theater. And still nobody went to see Zack Snyder’s tone-deaf take on this great comic book source material. Sigh.

This week, on the other hand, is something of a bonanza. Something for everyone (though not all of it super good). Nonstop action? Hardcore Henry. Artist biopic? Born to be Blue. Broad comedy? The Boss (though we didn’t review that one). Hardscrabble coming of age? Songs My Brothers Taught Me. Confounding foreign fare? Cemetery of Splendour. Violent action comedy? Mr. Right. Retro sci-fi animation? April and the Extraordinary World. Collegiate nostalgia with a side of beefcake? Everybody Wants Some!! Modern existential drama? Demolition. We didn’t even have time to take in Catherine Deneuve as a compassionate juvie judge in Standing Tall.

What stands out for me is that this makes two weeks in a row that Scott Marks has slapped five stars at the end of a review. Maybe everything isn’t getting worse all the time after all.
