SD emerges from Great Recession

The San Diego County unemployment rate was 4.6 percent in September, the lowest it has been since June of 2007, before the Great Recession, according to the California Employment Development Department. It was also 4.6 percent in that month.

September's 4.6 percent was down from a revised 5.1 percent in August and down from 6.1 percent a year ago. San Diego's 4.6 percent compares with California's 5.5 percent and the nation's 4.9 percent over the same period.

The county added 2500 jobs over the month and 46,900 over the past year. Local government jobs were up 4300 in the month, greatly because of seasonal factors — teachers and other school-related employees returning to the workforce. Leisure and hospitality jobs declined by 1600 jobs in the month, the biggest drop.
