Weekly Fish Report

½ Day - ¾ Day: The local ½ day boats have been getting out as they can between the storms and swell and they are producing rockfish, calico bass, and sculpin. The ¾ day boats are mostly concentrating on the ongoing yellowtail bite at the Coronado Islands and getting a few decent lingcod, barracuda, and bonito in the mix.

1 Day to 2.5 Day: The overnight boats out of Oceanside are fishing Catalina and San Clemente Island while the 1.5 day to 2.5 day trips out of San Diego are concentrating on the offshore banks and the northern Baja coast for yellowtail, rockfish and lingcod. A few of the boats have been reporting bluefin and yellowfin tuna in U.S. waters.

Weekly dock total for San Diego landings: 1661 anglers aboard 85 boats caught 132 sculpin, 1890 rockfish, 510 calico bass, 6 sand bass, 23 sheephead, 73 lingcod, 131 ocean whitefish, 10 barracuda, 15 bonito, 1 halibut, 16 rubberlip seaperch, 2 cabezon, 12 bluefin tuna and 680 yellowtail.

Fresh water: The tap-water fishing has been very good this spring. With lower reservoir levels the fishing has been more concentrated and water temps are up from normal. If we get enough rain to raise the levels substantially we may see some tough fishing until the reservoirs replenish with the nonplanted fishes such as largemouth bass, redear sunfish and blue catfish.

Whale Report: Officially, the gray whale migration is usually about through for the spring by now, though there are a few still coming up the line. Blue whale season is closing in and several have been sighted along the northern Baja coast. Large pods of dolphin have been sighted in the San Diego area which is a normal spring-time feeding habit before they break into smaller groups.
