Year of the ... selfie stick?

Will the spirit of Portland influence the dialecticians?

Dear Hipster:

I went ice skating a little while ago, and this group of teenagers had a selfie stick that they were using to take pictures of themselves not skating (because they were too busy looking at the selfies). I didn’t really know about them (selfie sticks, not teenagers) until then, but I did some googling, and I’ve since read that the selfie stick is one of the most popular gadgets in the world, and that it even made its way onto Time’s list of the 25 best inventions of 2014! Personally, I think the nail polish that detects date rape drugs is a way more important invention, but what do I know? So, anyways, “selfie” was the Oxford dictionary’s word of the year in 2013. The American Dialect Society has its annual meeting in Portland “Hipster Capital of the Universe” Oregon the week of January 8th. Do you think “selfie stick” stands a chance for 2014?

Nope.

For what it’s worth, Undercover Colors has yet to introduce a prototype product, so it wasn’t technically invented in 2014, only conceptualized. #truthbomb!
