Toni’s Native American retreat

Toni Atkins, Todd Gloria, Richard Pan...ding! ding! ding!

Democratic Assembly Speaker Toni Atkins and entourage stopped by the Barona Casino for free food and drink at the Italian Cucina there this spring, the tribe’s disclosure shows. Atkins got a meal worth $29.20 on May 8, as did her district director Denise Zellmann-Price and field representative Toni Duran. Brenda Haggerty, sergeant to Atkins, got the same.

On June 19, San Diego city councilman Todd Gloria, who is running for Atkins’s seat, of which she is termed out, came in for a free meal worth $16.39. Another big fan of Barona appears to be Democratic state senator Richard Pan, who received a $28 meal on April 1 and also stayed the night in a room worth $89.

Rachel Laing, the former media handler for ex-Republican mayor Jerry Sanders, didn’t derive any cash from her current occupation as a lobbyist during this year’s second quarter, according to a July 30 disclosure report by her company, Laing Strategic Communications. On the other hand, the document reveals, she was a fount of campaign money, including $600 to city attorney candidate Gil Cabrera, $350 for mayor Kevin Faulconer’s re-election bid, and $250 to keep the GOP’s Scott Sherman on the city council.

Laing also co-hosted a fundraiser for Democratic council woman Myrtle Cole’s legal defense fund that brought in $2300, and she co-chaired an event for Democratic councilman Todd Gloria’s Assembly bid that raised $5900. A fundraiser Laing helped put on for her favored city attorney candidate Cabrera hauled in $10,000, and another held at her house for council hopeful Chris Ward, came up with $2000.
