Tuna in skiff range

The great fishing continues off the SoCal coast and boats are out on the water in numbers rarely seen before. Many private boaters are able to get into the fray normally reserved for the larger vessels capable of longer range and handling rougher seas. When the tuna are just right out there in skiff range, and we're talking some quality fish, it can get a bit hectic.

The New Lo An released a striped marlin on an overnight trip. The Ranger 85 picked up their first ever opah. Nothing is surprising considering the water temp and lots of sign, like flying fish in La Jolla and "tuna" blue water right up to the beach. I don't expect any changes soon as we are in the middle of a normal season by August 1.

Some fifty sportboats went out yesterday. Here's the basic skinny...

Chubasco 2 Sportfishing hosted 24 anglers aboard 1 boat and reported 19 yellowtail, 5 yellowfin tuna and 4 dorado caught.

5 anglers aboard 1 boat out of Dana Landing caught 33 yellowtail, 49 yellowfin Tuna, 24 dorado, 14 bluefin tuna on a 2 day trip.

Fisherman's Landing sent 169 anglers out aboard 8 boats and reported 83 dorado, 33 yellowfin tuna, 152 yellowtail, 19 barracuda and 77 sand bass caught.

451 anglers aboard 14 boats out of H&M Landing accounted for 709 yellowtail, 305 yellowfin tuna, 5 skipjack tuna, 266 dorado, 1 opah, 13 sand bass, 13 calico bass and 2 barracuda.

Helgren's Oceanside Sportfishing hosted 76 anglers aboard 4 boats and called in 15 calico bass, 27 yellowtail, 31 dorado, 25 yellowfin tuna and 9 bluefin tuna as the day's total catch.

200 anglers aboard 8 boats out of Point Loma Sportfishing caught 179 yellowtail, 17 yellowfin tuna, 67 dorado, 7 bluefin tuna, 15 barracuda, and 1 Striped Marlin (released).

398 yellowtail, 79 calico bass, 56 yellowfin tuna, 212 dorado, 3 skipjack tuna, and 1 rockfish were caught by the 423 anglers aboard 14 boats out of Seaforth Sportfishing
