Excess sincerity

Dear Hipster:

Do hipsters like football? Not soccer. Football.

There are some hipsters who enjoy a bit of armchair quarterbacking, but they tend to refer to it as “American football” in order to suggest their collective preference for soccer. They pick players for their fantasy teams that nobody else in the league wants, and they usually say, “Well, I’m not really that into it” when serious sports talk arises. Football’s main deterrent to most hipsters is the ardent commitment required from fans. We are just too cool to dress like our favorite players and high-five each other because one team managed to rush into another’s end zone...come to think of it, maybe football, and its often comical terminology, is just too sincere for real hipsters.
