Free showing of Batman documentary: Saturday morning at The Ken

It’s long been my hope that Landmark’s Ken Cinema would throw in an occasional family film to introduce a new generation of moviegoers to single-screen living. While it’s a private rental and not on the official calendar, this weekend’s screening of a new Batman doc is still a terrific excuse to bring the kids to Kensington. And it’s free!

Legends of the Knight, a feature-length documentary that looks to Batmythology as its source of inspiration, screens at 10:30 this Saturday morning at Landmark’s Ken Cinema.

According to the press release, the family-friendly film funded through Kickstarter “weaves together the uplifting true stories of individuals who have overcome devastating obstacles, unselfishly given to the community, and embraced their inner superhero because of their love of Batman.”

The goal of writer-director Brett Culp is to get all those who embrace Batman to leave their Batcaves and enact positive change. Warner Bros. was kind enough to share the news via Facebook and Twitter, but as of yet D.C. Comics has not awarded the film its official stamp of approval, in spite of the filmmakers having “worked hard to carefully adhere to Best Practices for Fair Use.”

The free screening will benefit “It’s all about the kids,” San Diego’s second biggest children’s charity. I emailed Hector Andrade with CRM114 Productions, the organization responsible for bringing the show to town, asking how they expect to raise coins for charity at a free event.

“We were figuring out what would be the best way to funnel the money to the charity,” Andrade wrote, “so we decided to adopt the Radiohead method of distribution of ‘Pay what you want’: You come to the screening, have fun, eat popcorn etc...and then if you want, you can visit their website and click on the ‘Donate’ button. Give whatever you want, or give nothing, it’s up to you. I just didn’t want to spend time selling tickets or raffles and stuff. I really wanted to put it in the hands of the individual.”

And while you’re there, why not spring for popcorn and soda? It will make the kids happy while at the same time upping Landmark’s per capita. It’s a win/win.
