Meet Cherries Jubilee, Zachary Deak, Broken Stems, and more

The Reader’s Local Music Database now has over 3,700 individual band pages, covering performers from the 1950s through today. Most pages also include custom-created band histories, membership rosters then and now, discographies, MP3s, videos, links to related Reader articles, and more. These are the newest bands added.

Formed last year, Cherries Jubilee is a vintage jazz cabaret and supper club-style show reminiscent of 1900s speakeasy and burlesque house performers, including chorus dancers. The group includes Louis Fanucchi, who received a B.M. degree in accordion performance from San Diego State University in 1985, DJ Douglas LeClair of college radio station KPLR's weekly Any Swing Goes show, and dancers Lola Demure and Giselle Anguizola. They’ll appear at 98 Bottles in Little Italy on February 15.

Based in OB and PB and formed in mid-2013, the Broken Stems is fronted by singer/songwriter guitarist Jesse Gawlik, alongside Andrew Bache (drummer/singer), Chelsea Baker (bassist/singer), and Brad Sweet (keyboard/vocals). They cite their influences as including a capella groups, reggae, jazz, blues, hard rock, and soul, and their promo sheet declares “No genre or emotion goes untouched with this band.” Their debut five-song EP We Are Home was released in October, and you can check them out February 15 at Winstons in O.B.

San Diego-born and raised (by an American mother and a Slovak father), Zachary Deak began his musical studies at the age of five as a pre-schooler in Encinitas. At age thirteen, he began his studies at the Ecole Normale de Musique de Paris which awarded him various “diplomes” in 2004 and 2007, culminating in 2011 with the coveted “Diplome Superieure d’execution avec l’unanimite.” The classical pianist has performed extensively in France as a soloist and in chamber groups, participating in the premieres of contemporary works. In June 2012, he received the Hodgkins silver medal at the prestigious Chappell Medal piano competition in London.

In January 2013, Deak participated in the “Maria Joao Pires Academy” in Paris and performed in a concert at the Cite de la Musique. That July, he graduated from the Royal College of Music in London with a Masters degree in Performance with distinction.

Terms of Agreement is a variety cover band playing anything from country to ballads, R&B, hip-hop, dance electro, alternative, rock, music from the 1980s and 1990s, and Top 40.

Arch Rival Rocks was founded by Black Sabbath tribute specialist Jack Kaye (guitar, keys, vocals), along with Joe Mahoney (bass, vocals), and Jules Juliano (drums).

Sax player Curtis Brooks brings a fresh style with an old school flair to the city's emerging jazz scene. His debut gospel album New Seasons was released in May 2013,and his self-named band will play 98 Bottles on March 1.
