March's ArtPower! "Foovie," Yung Chang's The Fruit Hunters

We haven't heard much of Yung Chang in these parts since Up the Yangtze, his exacting impressionistic documentary on China's ever-changing landscape during the construction of the Three Gorges Dam, played the Landmark Hillcrest in 2008.

Next month's "Foovie" (Food + Movie) at ArtPower! promises another exotic cinema/culinary combo. What better way to let a delectable repast settle than with the San Diego premier of Chang's scrumptiously named, The Fruit Hunters?

A thrilling journey through nature, commerce and adventure, The Fruit Hunters is a cinematic odyssey that takes viewers from the dawn of humanity to the cutting of edge of modern agriculture - a film that will change not just the way we look at what we eat, but what it means to be human."

Dinner at 7pm, movie at 8pm. Watermelon and feta salad with basil oil top the menu, followed by toasted pepitos and sweet balsamic reduction glaze. Char-grilled chicken breast with mango jalapeño salsa and citrus wild rice with cranberry coulis round out the main course. For desert, crème filled seasonal fresh fruit tarts, whipped marscapone, and cherry demi glace. Vegetarian options available upon request. For those who enjoy a cocktail or two with dinner, it's a cash bar.

The event takes place at UC San Diego's The Loft on Thursday, March 6, at 911 Lyman Lane, La Jolla. Price for dinner and a movie $34 or $10 for the movie sans supper. Subscribers and UCSD students watch and eat at a discount. For more information, ArtPower.
