Endurance events pump up economy

San Diego's endurance events — marathons, open-water swims, triathlons, 5ks, and mud-runs — are bringing in money, according to a study by the National University System Institute for Policy Research.

Last year, more than 134,000 participants registered for 66 events, says the institute. Fully 34 percent of participants were from outside San Diego County

These events generated $64.1 million in total economic output, according to the study, creating 583 direct and induced jobs bringing $21.3 million in wages. A bonus: they don't cost much to put on.
