Ocean Beach Grave Babes seek contact with deceased

A new paranormal investigation group has popped up in Ocean Beach, and they are willing to help you determine who has been haunting your house, free of charge.

Jennifer Kacizak, self-proclaimed “Grave Babe,” is the creator of this team of two to three women who go to houses armed with electronic devices made to bring out spirits said to be existing in dwellings.

On my first night out with the Grave Babes, I met up with them at the Ocean Beach home of Ashley Haugen and her next-door neighbor, Audrey Rose, to determine if they had a ghost haunting Ashley's cottage. Ashley claims she feels she is being watched and that she has felt cold drafts in certain areas of her home, which she shares with no one else.

Jen and her cohort, Samantha Smith, used one of their many electronic devices to determine whether a spirit is indeed at Ashley's place. One of the electronic gizmos is called a “Spirit Box,” which is basically a radio-frequency detector that scans through signals at a rapid rate; Grave Babes ask questions and any present spirits are expected to answer through the box.

I have to admit, it was quite hair-raising, listening to the answers; at times they were eerily accurate. In response to the question, “What is your name?,” we heard the name "Mike Zable" several times.

One of the other devices, the Ghost Box Ovilus III, converts spoken words into digital text. Some of the words that popped up this night were, “Paul,” “Award,” “Human,” “Pluto,” and “Eat.”

Samantha, who says she is a medium, said objects such as furniture can be haunted or give her a bad feeling, as a vintage nightstand did at Ashley's home. Samantha advised her to get rid of it.

Some of their costly devices, such as the $300 K2 Meter, is said to light up if there are spirits in the room. Though Jen said she has seen only one of the five lights go off during the past year while she has been doing these sessions, we were surprised at my house when the meter lit up four of the lights very quickly and then stopped.

The Grave Babes record everything on a digital recorder and then later play it back to see if any “EVPs” (electronic voice phenomena) other than their own show up. While no other voices were produced at Ashley's house, she played back for me a recording from their recent visit to an Alpine cemetery. You can hear her talking, but very clearly, over her voice was whispered, "Don't stand on it."
