Welcome to the grand illusion — 40 years of Styx at Pechanga

For 90-plus minutes, a room full of 50-somethings was transported back to, as Styx guitarist/singer James “JY” Young said, "The Ford Administration," at Pechanga Resort and Casino. Styx was in town and suddenly it was 1976 all over again. The crowd, most of whom stood through the entire show, was treated to an energetic set of hits and deep cuts by the iconic ’70s and ‘80s stadium-rock band.

The set included hits such as “Lady,” “Grand Illusion,” and, of course, “Sail Away.” But we were also treated to lesser-known Styx songs, such as “Man in the Wilderness,” “Miss America,” and “Crystal Ball.” Original members Tommy Shaw and James Young were joined onstage by current members Todd Sucherman on drums, Ricky Phillips on guitar, and Lawrence Gowan on keyboards and vocals. Original Styx bassist Chuck Panozzo made a special guest appearance on a couple songs as well.

As a photographer I am usually limited to the first three songs, as was the case this night. I often leave after my three songs, but I really couldn't tear myself away. This was an amazing night of energetic, crowd-pleasing classic rock, and I stayed for the entire show.
