Who's Ready for Christmas?

As the second week of preseason NFL games concludes, my thoughts are turning toward autumn. I love this time of year, late August is pregnant with possibilities. The summer has yet to fade but when baseball gets long in the tooth then we know that October is coming.

The beach is mild and the water warm but the school year is upon us.

The spiders are spinning their webs which means Halloween can’t be that far away. Once we get Halloween in the mix then Thanksgiving may as well be included and since Thanksgiving is basically Christmas then here we are--Chirstmas in late August. I’m starting to feel festive.

In just two or three, or maybe six weeks, the symphony will be tuning up downtown. The symphony will be with us for October with the first concert of the season on the sixth before they leave for Carnegie Hall and then China.

October is laden with 20th Century composers such as Bernstein, Barber, Prokofiev, Rachmaninoff, Harbison, Ravel, and Gershwin. The oldest composer of the month is Dvorak.

I think the San Diego Symphony plays the 20th Century repertoire well so it should be a great month of concerts.

One concert I’m excited to see is Benjamin Britten’s Young Person’s Guide to the Orchestra on Sunday, October 20th. This is officially a family concert but I love this piece of music and think it’s good for all ages.
