Sempra's political pay day

Sempra is not picky about the animals it brands.

Officially it’s a non-election year, but that didn’t stop Sempra Energy from laying out $541,025 in political expenditures during the first six months of 2013. The California Democratic party picked up $125,000 from the San Diego–based utility giant. State Republicans got a relatively paltry $34,000. The California Republican Leadership Fund received $35,000. Sempra also kicked in $12,500 to the San Diego County Democratic Party, $2500 to county Republicans, and $10,000 to the Los Angeles Area Chamber of Commerce PAC. Women in Power, dedicated to “electing Democratic Women to the State Legislature,” according to an invitation to a $1000-a-head fundraiser the group staged at Roy’s on the Waterfront here, got $5000.
