Beauty Restored in Ocean Beach

Garden next to lifeguard tower, facing Abbott Street

The scraggly-looking display of succulents along the sidewalk at the foot of Santa Monica Avenue and Abbott Street have been spruced up. The little corner area near the Ocean Beach Lifeguard Tower has the San Diego Park & Rec Dept. to thank for its facelift.

On Wednesday, November 28, I stopped to admire the new look and found a city employee named Monique nearby. She had just finished watering the cactus and rock garden. I complimented her on how the city took a trashy little area and turned it into something stunning. Now the boulders are graffiti-free.The succulents have been cleaned up and a few new ones were planted. Mulch has been laid down to keep weeds at bay. No trash or cigarette butts to be found!

Monique told me the city had just completed an upgrade project on the lifeguard tower. Reportedly, $40,000 went into the facelift, which included a thorough water-pressure blasting, priming, and paint job.
