The Whitening of San Diego's 92113 Zip Code

More non-hispanic whites are moving into communities such as Barrio Logan, Logan Heights, Mountain View, and Southcrest.

According to a list compiled by education expert and executive vice president of the Thomas B. Fordham Institute, Michael Petrilli, and as reported by Slate, San Diego's 92113 zip code reported a 21.1 percent increase in the share of non-hispanic whites in the area, the 21st highest increase in the country.

Petrilli examined data from the 2010 census and compared it to the numbers from 2000.

The numbers, however, don't come without a few "caveats."

"I started poking around Census Bureau data (with the assistance of some colleagues and the Census Bureau’s excellent help line) and here’s what I found. I looked at zip codes (which isn’t perfect, because boundaries can change) and places with a large increase in the white share of the population (which isn’t perfect, because you’d really want to look at changes in income levels, but those data aren’t available yet for 2010)."

The highest rate of gentrification occurred in Columbia, South Carolina, followed by Chattanooga, and Chicago.
