Storefront Windows Defaced with Scratches

Some Ocean Beach merchants repaired the glass scratched by vandals

During an overnight vandalism spree in late January, the storefront windows of more than 30 Ocean Beach businesses were defaced. Over 90 sheets of glass were deeply scratched; the replacement cost was estimated in the thousands of dollars.

Flyers from the SDPD Street Gang Unit have been posted in the area seeking identification of the culprits. The flyer includes several photo stills taken by the surveillance camera of one of the businesses.

In Mission Beach, similar damage to many windows was reported last week. Publicity of the vandalism may have had the effect of producing copycats, as some of the same damage was recently spotted in a Clairemont strip mall.

On the afternoon of February 10, Joey was at work polishing away the damage made to front windows on a Newport Avenue furniture store . The work is time-consuming and exacting, he said, but the cost of repair (when possible) is much less than the cost of replacement and installation of entire sheets of tempered storefront glass.
