Former City Manager Lamont Ewell Pops Up in Oakland

P. Lamont Ewell, San Diego city manager from April 2004 to November 2005, before leaving to become city manager of Santa Monica, retiring there in December 2009, has popped up on the public payroll again, this time in a five-month gig as interim administrator for the City of Oakland, reports the Contra Costa Times.

By January 2007, the Union-Tribune reported, San Diego city taxpayers had coughed up at least $313,542 in legal fees for Ewell during a federal investigation of his role in the City’s failure to disclose the underfunding of its pension system while subsidizing a new ballpark for Padres owner John Moores. Ewell, who was San Diego’s deputy city manager before taking over the top job here, was Oakland’s fire chief during the city’s 1991 wildfire storm…Democratic congressman Bob Filner, who some have speculated is interested in running for San Diego mayor next year, continues to pad his 2012 congressional reelection campaign account. Latest scheduled event, according to the Sunlight Foundation’s Party Time website: “Baseball with Bob” at Nationals Park in Washington, D.C., on June 22. Tickets are $2000 per political action committee, $1000 for individuals.
